Description of session:  With the COVID-19 variants surging across the nation this summer, our presenters will share how FCNs can keep communities safe from respiratory illnesses. 

Learning outcomes: Upon completion of the activity, nurses will be able to:
1.    Utilize information about preventative measures and vaccines for COVID-19.
2.    Identify perspectives of and address concerns about underserved populations.
3.    Describe FDA recommendations and free CVEEP resources to educate their communities

Rev. Dr. Esther Brown is a nurse leader, career FCN, pastor, nurse faculty, and dean of her denominational seminary who has worked in health care and ministry for over 40 years. She continues to practice in the community with FCNs experiencing burnout and regularly provides support and resources for the greater FCN community. 
Dr. Kristen Kellogg is a doctorly-prepared Family Nurse Practitioner, Director of the Health Promotion Center and full-time faculty at Point Loma Nazarene University. The Health Promotion Center is a Free and Charitable clinic in southern California. Her DNP project focused on the health impacts of a free food box and healthy eating education program on patients experiencing food insecurity. She is active in Living Water Church of the Nazarene and volunteers at a street medicine clinic hosted through her church.
Dr. Amanda Thurman is a doctorly-prepared Family Nurse Practitioner at the Health Promotion Center/ at Point Loma Nazarene University and full-time faculty at Azusa Pacific University. Her Doctor of Nursing Practice scholarly project focused on training healthcare providers to screen for food insecurity in the clinical setting. As a member of Mission Church of the Nazarene in San Diego, CA she leads bible study and mission trips with her husband and 3 adult sons. Her passion is for providing care in underserved populations, teaching, and mentoring nursing students.
Dr. Mary Lynne Knighten is a nurse leader with over 37 years of experience in many areas of nursing, including being credentialed as a Faith Community Nurse, with a post-master’s certificate in Faith Community Nursing from Azusa Pacific University. She has been the Health Ministry Director at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Eagle Rock for 22 years and Adjunct Faculty at Azusa Pacific University. She serves as Immediate Past-President of FCNI and is passionate about translating research and evidence to practice.

Fact Sheet

The Health Ministry at St. Dominic Catholic Church is a ministry focused on whole person health--mind, body, spirit--within the context of our Catholic faith tradition and meets monthly on the first Wednesday of the month, 7:30-8:30pm in the St. Mark Room. 

The aim is to provide health promotion and disease prevention activities to our parishioners and school children and their families, and the community in order to facilitate health, promote wellness, and hopefully achieve healing.  

The ministry is comprised of volunteer nurses, specially-trained parish nurses, therapists, physicians, and non-healthcare members who are passionate about health and wellness. 

If you have a health problem and need to see the Parish Nurse, she is on site every Thursday 8 a.m. to 12 noon in the St. Mark Room and we offer blood pressure screening every Sunday 8:30-10:30 a.m.
